Holiday apartment in Jalšovík: hills, stream and folk culture

Jalšovík has hills, oak forests and the Jalšovík stream. The village’s history and culture include historical name forms, a resumption of settlement references and documented folk songs.

Nature

The municipality of Jalšovík is bordered by hills to the east and west; the steeper slopes are covered with oak forests. The Jalšovík stream flows through the municipality and rises below Žobrák. Together with its tributaries, it forms a naturally flowing, strongly meandering stream in the hilly landscape. Its riparian vegetation is predominantly continuous and locally transitions into alluvial forest. West of Dolný Badín, the Jalšovík stream flows into the Krupinica.

Above the municipality lies Horné lúky, a complex consisting predominantly of woody vegetation on the slopes of the Jalšovík stream valley. The Kopanica – Stránička – Hrušťava – Stádliská complex is more extensive. It includes extensive semi-natural grass and herb stands on the slopes of the left part of the Jalšovík stream valley and its tributaries, on the ridge between the valleys of the Jalšovík and Vrbovok streams, and in the right part of the Vrbovok stream valley. Uramov laz has well-developed hornbeam-oak stands. The vegetation types mentioned are located in and above the municipality in different habitats.

History

Jalšovík was first mentioned in writing in 1418; the name forms “Jelsoukh” and “Jelsouk” appear in that record. The name of Horný Jalšovík has also been preserved in various historical forms: “Felsew Alsok” is documented for 1542 and “Felseo Jalsok” for 1578. The municipality of Jalšovík ceased to exist at the end of the 16th century; at the beginning of the 19th century, it is mentioned again as a settlement. These three references from different periods make the changing naming and settlement history of the village immediately visible.

Culture

The local infrastructure of Horný Jalšovík includes a bell tower. No masses are celebrated in the chapel of Jalšovík. Local culture also includes specific publications and audio recordings: in 2015, a CD entitled “Zdola Jalšovíka” was recorded. In 2016, the publication “F tom javšovskom ťichom hájku – Ľudové piesne z Ho” was released in Jalšovík.

Folk songs from Jalšovík, selected from the previously unpublished songs collected there, were performed by residents and people originating from Jalšovík. The designation “krekáčsky kroj” also refers to a regional textile tradition: it is considered a variant of the folk costume of Senohrad. The bell tower, chapel, song collection, CD and folk costume thus stand alongside one another as distinct cultural references.
