Discover Cerovo: Bookbinding Tradition, Forest Valleys and Holiday Apartment

Cerovo stands out for a distinctive craft tradition: local farmers learned from itinerant bookbinders how to bind books, especially religious books, in leather. The bookbinding tradition also included decorating book covers with brass fittings.

Geographical setting

Cerovo is situated in the Krupinská výšina, in a shallow depression on a flat ridge between the Litavica valley and the Trpín valley. The steep slopes of the valleys around Cerovo are continuously covered with oak and beech forest.

Nature

In Cerovo, the Rybník Cerovo pond is designated as a wetland. During the winter months, residents use it as a natural ice rink; the pond is located next to the Cerovo cemetery.

Culture and history

A Lutheran congregation was established in Cerovo sometime between 1540 and 1550. The Evangelical church is a Neoclassical building constructed in 1855–1859 on the site of a medieval church, which probably dated from 1559.

The church is in good condition and continues to be used for its religious purpose. Its altar contains a painting of Jesus by P. M. Bohúň, while the Neoclassical baptismal font dates from 1863.

Textile work is also part of Cerovo’s history. In the first half of the 20th century, linen and blankets were woven here; lace of the so-called Hont type was also made.

Several traditional houses of this type have survived to this day. Houses of this type continued to be built in Cerovo until the 1950s. They are 5–7 metres wide and up to five times as long as they are wide.

The Cerovo cemetery contains sandstone tombstones with semicircular tops dating from the second half of the 19th century. The memorial house in Cerovo is associated with the politician and bishop Samuel Zoch (1882–1928).

The remains of Cerovo Castle are located south of Cerovo on Pustý hrad mountain. The steep climb to the remains is suitable only for experienced hikers.

On 12 September 2026, the Slovak two-horse ploughing championships will take place in Cerovo.
