Hontianske Tesáre – Tesárska Gorge, Churches and Holiday Apartments

Hontianske Tesáre lies on the southwestern edge of the Krupinská planina. The Štiavnica stream flows through the municipality, and the Tesárska Gorge, a short canyon with volcanic sediments, is part of the local landscape. The international E77 road also passes through Hontianske Tesáre, connecting Budapest with Warsaw.

Nature

The rare and endangered spring pheasant's eye (Adonis vernalis) is the focus of the Šinkov salaš Nature Reserve. This protected Slovak plant species forms a population of several thousand specimens there. It grows on former mown mountain meadows and along the edges of oak forests. The area is subject to the fifth level of nature protection.

Tesárska Gorge is a short canyon in predominantly volcanic sediments originating from the Štiavnica stratovolcano. Its cross-bedding documents chaotic sedimentation typical of river deltas and suggests that the area was once a shallow sea. There are four waterfalls in the gorge; the third upstream is about 8 metres high. The waterfalls are particularly visible in spring during the snowmelt.

The Tesárske dúpence are another striking rock formation. These are rock chambers measuring approximately 5 to 6 metres across and 180 to 200 centimetres high, which probably served as hiding places for local residents during the Ottoman incursions.

Geology

A fossil site lies in the Dvorníky cadastral area of the municipality of Hontianske Tesáre. Water erosion exposes layers of marine sediments there. The exposed fine-grained sandstone layers contain numerous fossils.

History

The remains of the Romanesque Church of St. Michael stand on a small rise in the Hontianske Tesáre–Dvorníky cadastral area, in the Patkôš locality on the right bank of the Štiavnica. The church once belonged to a series of religious buildings lining the important imperial-royal postal road Magna Via. The former church was built in the 12th century and fell into disrepair in the 19th century. Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque construction phases have been identified archaeologically.

Archaeological finds point to continuous settlement in Hontianske Tesáre from the hillfort period through the Middle Ages. Karol Braxatoris is also associated with the village: he was an Evangelical pastor in Hontianske Tesáre and is buried there. He was also a religious writer and author of hymns.

Culture

Šipice is home to an Evangelical church, a Neoclassical building dating from 1801. A free-standing bell tower stands beside it. The Catholic Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary was originally Gothic and dates from the second half of the 14th century; it was remodelled in the Baroque style from 1722 to 1728.

Hontiansky jarmok and Gulášmajster 2026 is a cultural and social event dedicated to preserving, presenting and promoting the traditional culture of the Hont region. The event combines a fair with a goulash-cooking competition, which will be held for the 19th time in Hontianske Tesáre in 2026. Visitors can take part in creative workshops focused on traditional skills, including textile techniques, blacksmithing, making wax candles and bobbin lace.

Views and Trails

The Hontianske Tesáre observation tower is open to visitors. From there, views extend across Hontianske Tesáre and the wider surroundings of the Hont region. The observation tower can be reached on foot from the municipal office via a marked route of approximately 1.5 kilometres. The trail initially follows a paved road and then continues along a field track.

Wine and Traditions

Numerous cellars carved into the rock have been preserved in Dvorníky; they were used to store wine. In Hontianske Tesáre, it was once customary to pool wine for the pastor after the grape harvest.
