Discover Hontianske Nemce: Holiday Apartment, Churches and Educational Trail

Hontianske Nemce lies in the valley of the Štiavnica River. The village is situated in front of the Štiavnické vrchy, the young volcanic mountains of the Slovak Central Mountains, and in front of the Krupinská planina. These spatial relationships give Hontianske Nemce a clearly recognisable landscape setting between the river valley, volcanic mountains and plateau.

Culture

The parish church dedicated to Saint Martin was built in the first half of the 13th century as a three-nave Romanesque basilica. St. Martin's Church is surrounded by a fortified wall. It later acquired Gothic elements; the chancel and sacristy were built in the Renaissance style, while the tower is Baroque. This building therefore allows several historical styles to be seen directly in a single church. The church thus makes it possible to trace a coherent architectural history from the Romanesque period to the Baroque.

The Mariánsky stĺp stands in the park. It dates from the second half of the 18th century and is designed in the Rococo style. A statue of the Madonna, Mary Help of Christians, stands on the column monument. The Mariánsky stĺp was renovated in 1899. Next to the church cemetery is the Súsošie Kalvária, which dates from the first half of the 19th century and combines Classicist elements with Baroque ones. The ensemble consists of five free-standing sculptures: three crosses with the Crucified figures, as well as statues of the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist.

The Church of Saint Urban and Saint Donatus is located in the Vinice district. It underwent extensive Baroque restoration in the late 17th or early 18th century. The traditional Nemčianske fašiangy, regarded as a symbol of joy and abundance, are also part of the vibrant local life. At the Nemčianske fašiangy 2025, a cheerful procession passed through the village with accordion music, singing and music.

The Pavol Turčan Watermill is regularly open to the public. The building houses the ethnographic Nemčianské múzeum. The mill and museum thus combine the preserved site of milling activity with an ethnographic collection.

Nature and Trails

The Koháryho dub educational trail begins at the primary school in Hontianske Nemce, leads to the protected Koháryho dub tree and ends in the cadastral territory of the municipality of Kráľovce-Krnišov. The educational trail is 3.8 km long; the walking time is 1.5 hours. The first 740 metres run along a state road. The length, stated walking time and specific route are therefore just as much part of this trail as its destination at the protected tree.

Pilgrimage

Hontianske Nemce is a pilgrimage site of Our Lady of the Scapular on the Central European Marian Route. The Slovak section of this Marian Route can be walked in both directions. The village is therefore also connected with a religious route whose Slovak section is described as walkable in both directions.
