Discover Devičie: Viticulture, Culture and Volcanic Mountains

Devičie combines historical evidence, rural architecture and viticulture with a landscape shaped by volcanic geology and protected areas. A historic road, a Baroque-Classical church, traditional vineyard cottages and a winery with BIO certification give the village several distinctive facets. There is also a hiking route ending in Devičie, as well as a former quarry where swimming in clean water is possible.

Culture and History

A historic road associated with Devičie includes a preserved section approximately 300 metres long. Archaeological finds in Devičie also include a Baroque road. Both examples represent different historical traces that converge in the village.

The Evangelical Church of Devičie is a Baroque-Classical single-nave building with a segmentally terminated presbytery and an attached tower dating from 1785. The tower was added during renovations in 1804. Inside, there is a wooden gallery running around the interior and a Rococo altar.

The historic rural architecture of Devičie includes stone three-room houses with stables and barns from the first half of the 19th century. An illustrative individual example is Folk Farmhouse No. 23, a three-room masonry building with a rectangular floor plan dating from 1837, which is listed in the ÚZPF. Traditional vineyard cottages are also part of the village’s vernacular architecture. A historic bridge complements this built heritage: it is a completely preserved single-arch structure made of local volcanic rock.

Viticulture and Rural Character

Viticulture in Devičie is associated with a specific business and with characteristic architectural traces. The Papillon – VÍNO OD FRANCÚZA winery is located in Devičie and was founded in 2018. Since 2019, Papillon has been a certified BIO winery. The winery was created by converting an old stone house.

Since 2018, Papillon has been preparing its land in Devičie for establishing vineyards using organic and biodynamic farming methods. The vineyards are located in Devičie on a slope with volcanic soil. The village also has excavated wine cellars for storing wine. Thus, viticulture, soil and vernacular architecture appear in several different forms within the village landscape.

Nature and Geology

The Štiavnické vrchy are the largest volcanic mountain range in the Western Carpathians. The cadastral area of Devičie partially belongs to the protected zone of the Banská Štiavnica Geopark and partially to the Štiavnické vrchy Protected Landscape Area. Both spatial relationships apply only to part of the cadastral area in each case.

The former quarry is also one of the aforementioned natural features: swimming in clean water is possible in a former quarry.

Hiking

The “Krupina – Vartovka – Uňatín – Devičie” hiking route ends in Devičie. The village is therefore also listed as the destination of this named route.
