Winter and Events

Every February, the “Serbările Zăpezii” event takes place in Cârlibaba, featuring winter sports competitions, performances and entertaining games.

The February event thus combines sporting competitions with a programme of performances and games. At “Serbările Zăpezii”, winter sports and entertainment take place as part of the same event.

Nature

Piatra Țibăului is a national geological and palaeontological nature reserve within the administrative territory of the municipality of Cârlibaba.

The protected area covers 20.30 hectares.

It lies at an altitude of 1,200 metres at the confluence of the Țibău Valley and the Bistrița Aurie River.

The Găina – Lucina SCI site includes the protected areas of Tinovul Găina – Lucina and Cheile Lucavei.

The Vârful Tătărcii peak is located in the vicinity of Cârlibaba.

Mount Fluturica is also located in the vicinity of Cârlibaba.

The Vârful Tonca peak is located in the vicinity of Cârlibaba.

The Vârful Cândrinari peak is likewise located in the vicinity of Cârlibaba.

These natural destinations therefore include a national nature reserve, an SCI site, and several peaks and mountains in the vicinity. At Piatra Țibăului, the protected area of 20.30 hectares, the elevation of 1,200 metres and the location at the confluence of two watercourses come together.

Getting There

National road DN18 leads to Cârlibaba.

On its route there, it passes through Sighetu Marmației, Vișeu de Sus, Borșa and Botoș.

The journey is therefore described by a specifically named road connection and several places along its route. The route via Sighetu Marmației, Vișeu de Sus, Borșa and Botoș is part of the connection provided by national road DN18 to Cârlibaba.

Culture

The Biserica Romano-Catolică din Cârlibaba was built in 1900 for the Catholic community.

It was established in this multi-ethnic region of Bukovina.

In the centre of Cârlibaba, the “Monument comemorativ Bogdan I” stands on a rock.

It commemorates Bogdan I’s passage through the area in 1359.

The Mânăstirea Moldova-Suliţa monastery is located in the vicinity of Cârlibaba.

The Mânăstirea Sfânta Treime monastery is located in the wider regional surroundings of Cârlibaba.

The Biserica Ortodoxă Benia Orthodox church is located in the vicinity of Cârlibaba.

The Biserica Ortodoxă Moldova-Suliţa Orthodox church is also located in the vicinity of Cârlibaba.

Thus, the Catholic church and the Bogdan I monument are located in the town itself, while further monasteries and Orthodox churches are situated in the vicinity or the wider regional surroundings. The monument combines its central location on a rock with the commemoration of Bogdan I’s passage through the area.

Other places to discover include Suceava, Solca, Frasin, Moldova-Suliţa, Fundu Moldovei, Pârteștii de Sus, Prisaca Dornei and Podu Coșnei.

Route and Regional Cuisine

Along the Cârlibaba–below Vârful Omului route, shepherds can organise a small tasting of various cheeses for tourists for a fee and prepare Balmoș.

Balmoș is a traditional dish made from cornmeal, whey, sour cream and cheese curds.

The trail connects the Rodna and Suhard Mountains and continues into the Călimani Mountains.
