Moldova-Sulița: Nature, Culture and History

The Cheile Lucavei are located in the area of the municipality of Moldova-Sulița, on the road towards Lucina. The geological and morphological nature reserve covers 33 hectares; rare plants are protected there, including bearberry and edelweiss.

Nature

The Tinovul Găina-Lucina peat bog is located in the administrative territory of the municipality of Moldova-Sulița, in Suceava County, at 1,165 metres above sea level and within the ROSCI0086 Găina-Lucina Natura 2000 protected area.

Tourist and educational activities are permitted in the Răchitișul Mare nature reserve, provided that the applicable visitor rules are observed.

Access to the Răchitișul Mare nature reserve is via European road E576 and DJ175 as far as the village of Benea in the municipality of Moldova-Sulița, followed by a further 2 kilometres.

Landscape and Activities

Herghelia Lucina is located in the Lucava Valley, a small depression in the Obcina Mestecănișului mountains.

A hike led towards the small church in Hropi.

A high-altitude hike to the 1,477-metre-high Știrbu mountain was part of a youth programme.

Entering Peștera Lucavei was also part of a youth programme.

As part of a youth programme, the Cheile Lucavei and a sulphur spring were visited.

The Cârlibaba–Moldova-Sulița cycle route initially reaches the Cheile Lucavei nature reserve and then, after a further 2 kilometres, leads to the main road in the centre of the municipality of Moldova-Sulița.

Culture and History

Herghelia Lucina was founded in 1856.

Near Lucina there is a stone memorial cross erected on 10 August 1889.

At the annual Huțul Festival at Herghelia Lucina, the traditions and history of the Huțuls are kept alive through language, singing and dancing.

The wooden church of the Sfântul Vasile cel Mare Monastery is located in Moldova-Sulița.

The „Sfântul Vasile cel Mare“ skete in the municipality of Moldova-Sulița comprises a church, a chapel, a guesthouse, a refectory and auxiliary buildings.

The Church of Sfântul Nicolai in Moldova-Sulița was founded in 1895 and consecrated in 1896.

In the past, the art of decorating eggs on a dark background was highly valued in the localities of Moldova-Sulița and Breaza.

The historical sites are likewise documented from their founding through their use: Herghelia Lucina was founded in 1856, while the annual Huțul Festival incorporates language, singing and dancing. In Moldova-Sulița itself, the church, chapel, guesthouse, refectory and auxiliary buildings of the skete are also located together.

Events and Cuisine

The “În Cetatea lui Dumnezeu” youth camp took place from 28 to 30 July 2025 in Moldova-Sulița, in its tenth edition.

A culinary event with a Ukrainian focus was held in Moldova-Sulița in its fifth edition; traditional dishes were prepared over a wood fire and offered to participants for tasting.
