Landscape

The relief of Șcheia is considered amphitheatre-shaped and opens towards the valley of the Șcheia stream. This terrain form is part of the geographical character of the place and provides the spatial context for the historical sites mentioned.

History and Fortresses

The early inhabitants of Șcheia are considered to have been stonemasons and builders of fortresses. The stonemasons known as “șcheieni” were widespread in all three Romanian principalities. The structures they built there included numerous defensive fortresses, princely courts, churches and monasteries. Their work was therefore associated with both fortified complexes and representative and sacred buildings.

The ruins of Cetatea Șcheia are located in the vicinity of Șcheia. They lie to the northwest of the city of Suceava. They are situated on Dealul Șeptilici at an altitude of 384 metres. Cetatea Șcheia was built at the end of the 14th century. Its construction took place during the reign of Petru Mușat. The ruins were considered to be one of the early stone fortresses of the medieval Moldavian region. The directly stated features of the structure therefore include the name Cetatea Șcheia, its location on Dealul Șeptilici and the altitude of 384 metres.

Archaeology

The archaeological site is named Situl arheologic de la Şcheia - Silişte. As an archaeological site, it is listed under heritage protection code LMI SV-I-s-B-05438. It is located approximately 100 metres southeast of the railway station. The place name thus combines Șcheia and Silişte in the designation of the site, while the heritage protection code is given as LMI SV-I-s-B-05438.

Churches and Monasteries

The Mănăstirea „Sfântul Ilie” Șcheia monastery was re-established in 2022. Its re-establishment took place 237 years after it was closed. The closure was a consequence of the occupation of Bukovina. The monastery’s pronaos contains 24 painted scenes. They depict the life of the prophet Elijah. The information about the monastery thus combines the year of its re-establishment, the interval since its closure and the depictions located there.

The large church was built in Sfântu Ilie. Its patronal dedication is „Martiri și mărturisitori ai lui Hristos din perioada comunistă“. The construction period was between 2009 and 2020. The patronal dedication explicitly refers to martyrs and confessors of Christ from the communist period.

The parish church of Parohia Sfânta Ecaterina in Sfântu-Ilie, Șcheia, is a wooden church. Biserica Buna Vestire in Șcheia was consecrated on 24 April 2005. Between 2006 and 2013, it received an iconostasis carved from oak wood. The iconostasis bears painted icons. Thus, for Biserica Buna Vestire, both the date of consecration and the later addition of the carved iconostasis with its painted icons are specified.

Spiritual Life

A pastoral meeting of priests took place at Parohia Buna Vestire Șcheia on 20 January 2025 at 4:00 p.m.
