Discover Frasin: Churches, Fossils and Caves

The 2016 edition of Hora Bucovinei took place at Tabăra Bucşoaia in Frasin. The event promotes traditions and customs associated with tourist sheepfolds in Bukovina. The event offers opportunities to sample traditional Bucovinian products. The venue in Bucşoaia is thus associated with regional customs and Bucovinian specialities.

Culture

Biserica Sf. Arhangheli Mihail şi Gavriil stands in Bucşoaia. Following a donation from worshippers of the Capu Satului parish in Câmpulung, it was rebuilt at its present location. When it was reconsecrated, the church in Bucşoaia received an additional dedication. It is called „Duminica Tuturor Sfinţilor“.

The main church of Mănăstirea Schimbarea la Faţă was consecrated in 1998. The consecration was performed by IPS Pimen, the Archbishop of Suceava and Rădăuți. As early as 1997, Rusu Gavril, Rusu Vasile, Rusu Victor, Gemănaru Gheorghe, Bălan Constantin and other donors donated a meadow and woodland. This foundation was intended for the present-day Mănăstirea Schimbarea la Faţă monastery and a chapel.

Construction of the church in Doroteia began in 1872. The building work continued until 1875. The churches in Bucşoaia and Doroteia therefore each represent their own construction and use history, while Mănăstirea Schimbarea la Faţă is characterised by the consecration of its main church and the preceding foundation.

Geographical setting

Voroneţ Monastery is located in the vicinity of Frasin. Mânăstirea Pârteştii de Jos Monastery is also located in the vicinity of Frasin. The Orthodox church Biserica Ortodoxă Vârfu Dealului is located in the vicinity of Frasin. These three religious sites therefore belong to the immediate surroundings without being located within the town limits of Frasin.

Schitul Rarău Monastery is located in the wider regional surroundings of Frasin. This distinction separates the sites in the vicinity from destinations located farther away in the region.

Nature

A fossil-bearing site is located on Dealul Frasin within the town limits of Frasin. The fossils mentioned there include nummulites, lamellibranchs and other fossils from the Eocene. The Eocene is the second epoch of the Palaeogene. The site thus connects a specific location within the town limits with fossils from a clearly named geological epoch.

One of the easier routes described for reaching Avenele de la Frasin begins in the village of Bucşoaia. From there, one reaches Frasin from the direction of Gura Humorului via the E 58. The starting point described and the road connection mentioned therefore belong to the same route description.

Avenul de la Frasin is considered a national record for depth and length among sandstone caves.
