Şaru Dornei: Călimani National Park, bog trail and peaks

Nature

The visitor centre of Călimani National Park is located in Şaru Dornei. An educational exhibition at the centre presents the natural assets of the national park as well as the local landscape and culture. The centre began operating in 2013. At Tinovul Şaru Dornei, there is a specially designed themed trail. It offers a two-hour exploration of the hidden world of the bog. Thus, the natural area focuses both on learning at the visitor centre and on directly exploring a bog area.

Hiking and peaks

The 12 Apostoli nature reserve comprises rock formations in human and animal shapes that attract numerous visitors. The 12 Apostoli peak can be reached from Gura Haitii in the municipality of Şaru Dornei. The path is marked with a blue dot. The route is approximately 12 kilometres long. The round trip takes about three hours.

At 2,100 metres, Pietrosul is the highest peak in the Călimani Mountains. From Gura Haitii, this peak can be reached via a hiking trail through 12 Apostoli and Pietrele Roșii. The Drăgoiasa–Mănăstirea Neagra Şarului–Şaru Dornei trail offers views of the peaks of the Călimani Mountains and Muntele Bucinişul, with shepherds' huts lined up along its ridge. The Bistriței Mountains are in the background. The route leads into the municipality of Şarul Dornei, passes Mănăstirea Neagra Şarului and ends in the village of Negra Şarului at the tourist information centre. Thus, in addition to the peaks, a monastery, a village and an information centre are included as named points along this trail.

The Sărbătoarea Bujorului de Munte in Şaru Dornei took place on 6 and 7 June. This event was the 19th edition. In Țara Dornelor, the event is one of the important cultural and tourist events. The event date therefore covers two days in June and is associated with a specific edition of this festival.

Cycling

Route 05MB21 “Şaru Dornei – Neagra Şarului – Şaru Dornei” is a cycling circuit. It runs through the Depresiunea Șarul Dornei around the Tinovul Şarul Dornei nature reserve. The route name identifies Şaru Dornei and Neagra Şarului as its starting and ending points; the route is also linked to the Depresiunea Șarul Dornei and the Tinovul Şarul Dornei nature reserve.
