Gura Humorului: Monasteries, Ski Slopes and Mountain Landscapes

Gura Humorului combines the Bucovina monasteries with striking landscapes and a wide range of leisure activities. The Bucovina monastery region extends between the valleys of the Suceava and Moldovița across the Obcines of Bucovina. Three ring-shaped tourist roads cross this area. Voroneț Monastery is located within the territory of Gura Humorului, 4 kilometres from the administrative centre. Humor Monastery is less than 6 kilometres away and can be reached via the DJ 177.

Culture

The present-day church of Humor Monastery was built in 1530. The Museum of Bucovina Folk Customs presents folk traditions using conventional museum methods. Within the Romanian cultural network, the museum is regarded as a unique institution. The international festival of satirical graphics and humorous literature “Umor la… Gura Humorului”, which began in 1991, has its own distinctive cultural tradition.

Routes

Gura Humorului lies on the east–west tourist route DN 17, which connects Suceava, Vatra Dornei and Cluj. Most access roads to the tourist destinations in the surrounding area branch off from this route. The different road layouts and designated access roads make route planning a separate part of the day’s travel; current traffic conditions and timetables should be checked before departure.

Leisure

The Ariniș Aquatic Centre has three heated pools: one indoor pool and two outdoor pools. The covered pool area also includes two saunas and a hot-water whirlpool. The Ariniș leisure complex also features the 2.2-kilometre-long Megatiroliana Bucovina zip line. For the heated pools, it is advisable to check the current opening hours before visiting.

Landscape and Winter Sports

The Șoimul I ski slope is 1,500 metres long and has a medium to high difficulty level. Șoimul II is 550 metres long and suitable for beginners. An observation tower stands on the upper plateau of the Șoimul ski slope. In summer, the Șoimul chairlift offers views of the surrounding mountain landscape. Before a day of skiing, current operating hours and slope conditions should be checked.

The hiking trail “Gura Humorului – Vârful Piciorul Înalt – Dealul Cetate – Gura Humorului” begins at the edge of Gura Humorului in the direction of the village of Mănăstirea Humorului. From the summit of Vârful Piciorul Înalt, the hiking trail offers views over the Moldova Valley, Gura Humorului and the Obcina Vornețului. The route therefore leads from its starting point over named elevations and landforms to a viewpoint overlooking the valley, town and Obcina.
