Liubcova: Church, Archaeology and Serbian Festival

Culture and History

The Serbian Orthodox Church in Liubcova was completed in 1794. Arsenije Jakšić painted its interior in 1821. The church also houses around 20 old religious books from the 18th century. An even older trace leads to the Liubcova–Țiglărie archaeological site. It is a Bronze Age cremation necropolis of the Gârla-Mare culture. In Kočin jendek, a marble monument in the form of a pyramid was erected in 1991 in honour of the hero Koča. The church combines a Serbian Orthodox sacred building with dated interior paintings and a collection of historic religious books. The necropolis and the monument add their own cultural features. The cultural sites range from the Bronze Age necropolis and the religious books from the 18th century to the church completed in 1794 and the marble monument erected in Kočin jendek in 1991. The books belong to the church collection, while the paintings enhance the interior and the completion date places the construction in time. The sequence connects the Bronze Age cremation necropolis with sacred evidence from the 18th and 19th centuries and a 20th-century monument. Arsenije Jakšić's paintings and the old books belong to the church, while Liubcova–Țiglărie is a separate archaeological site.

Location on the Danube

Liubcova lies in the Danube lowland on the left bank of the Danube. The village is located between the Danube tributaries Brestelnik and Orevica and 30 km downstream from Stara Moldava. Paved roads connect Liubcova with the seat of the municipality, Stara Moldava and Orșova. The location on the Danube and the connections via paved roads shape the geographical classification of the village.

Mountains and Elevations

Two differently classified elevations are located in the immediate vicinity of Liubcova: Veliki Slanski Vrh is a mountain, while Gornea is a peak. Festival and Cuisine

The Serbian festival takes place in Liubcova in the first week of October. The Stenca Liubcovei ensemble performs Romanian and Serbian folk dances. The festival date and the dance programme are different components of the same cultural event.

Many fish-based dishes are prepared in Liubcova. Fish dishes are a distinct culinary focus alongside the cultural attractions and the festival.
