Brebu between monastic tradition and Roman history

Brebu combines sacred history with a Roman past and a designated protected area. The monastery is located on a small plateau between Brebu and Soceni, on the road between Caransebeş and Reşiţa. At Gura Văii, a Roman site and a Mansio inn add to the attractions; within the municipality of Brebu in Caraș-Severin County, the “Locul fosilifer de la Apadia” protected area is also listed under the designation RONPA0331.

Brebu Monastery is located between Brebu and Soceni on a small plateau. Its location is on the road between Caransebeş and Reşiţa. This precise geographical setting is as much part of the monastery’s character as its construction and consecration history. Culture and history

The church of Brebu Monastery was consecrated on 1 October 1999. In 2000, the church was elevated to the rank of a monastery under the patronage of “Acoperământul Maicii Domnului”. Access to the monastery leads through an oak gate carved in the Maramureș style in 2001 and made by Ioan de la Năneşti.

The church “Înălţarea Domnului” is also part of the sacred architectural history. It was built in the Baroque style and is supported by twelve buttresses. The imperial icons on its iconostasis were restored in 2013. An earlier wooden church in Brebu bore the name “Sfântul Chiriac Sihastrul”; it was built in 1728 and destroyed by fire during the Austro-Turkish War of 1788. For visits to historic churches, travellers can check current opening hours and announced dates before arrival. Religious events may also entail specific visiting times for the church interiors.

The old Cozlarul route is also part of the history of the municipality. It ran through Brebu and once connected Berzovia with Tibiscul. Alongside the preserved and described sacred buildings, this historic connection is another reference point to the past.

Culture

The Roman site at Gura Văii is located 3 km northeast of the village of Brebu, at the foot of Dealul Cozlarul and 40 m from the Reşiţa–Caransebeş road. The Mansio inn at Gura Văii is considered a Roman construction with two reconstruction phases.

The Mansio inn comprises eleven rooms, four of which were heated by a hypocaust system, as well as a basin (natatio) that served as a bath. The Roman construction has a regular floor plan with side lengths of 19 × 20 m. The Roman Mansio is located about 2 km from Brebu in the direction of Caransebeş and approximately 50 m from the Reşiţa–Caransebeş national road. For archaeological sites, it is likewise advisable to check the current visiting hours in advance.

The “Locul fosilifer de la Apadia” protected area is listed under the designation RONPA0331 within the municipality of Brebu in Caraș-Severin County.
