Băile Herculane – Discover Thermal Baths, Culture and Nature
Thermal Baths and Springs
The spa resort of Băile Herculane is part of Domogled–Valea Cernei National Park. Along the Cerna, 16 thermomineral springs are known in the vicinity of the resort, spread over almost 4 km.
If you would like to learn about the town’s spa tradition, Băile Herculane offers thermal baths and drinking fountains with mineral water. The services also include hydrotherapy, physiotherapy and terrain cures.
At the Băile Imperiale Romane, visitors can see a bas-relief of Hercules and restored pools from the Roman thermal baths. The complex thus preserves two specific testimonies to the Roman thermal baths: the relief and the restored pools.
History and Architectural Heritage
The Muzeul de istorie „Gen. Nicolae Cena“ houses an altar stone. It bears a votive inscription from the year 153 AD. This inscription is considered the first epigraphic mention of the spa resort.
Piața Hercules is the historic centre of Băile Herculane. The square was laid out in the Baroque style. Impressive buildings from the period of Habsburg rule stand around it.
Hotel Decebal was built between 1860 and 1862 during the Habsburg development phase. It features a Transylvanian Baroque style.
Băile Herculane railway station is also part of the town’s architectural history. It opened on 20 May 1878 and is designed in the Baroque style.
Several named places make the architectural history tangible in terms of time and space: the museum houses the altar stone with the inscription from the year 153, buildings from the period of Habsburg rule are concentrated around Piața Hercules, and Hotel Decebal and the railway station document the later development in the Baroque style. The documented history thus extends from the Roman era to the 19th century.
Nature and Trails
In Domogled–Valea Cernei National Park, visitors from Băile Herculane can hike along marked trails. The hikes are possible with or without a guide.
Crucea Albă is located on a rocky outcrop 529 m above sea level. The viewpoint is situated above the historic centre.
Crucea Albă offers panoramic views of Băile Herculane and the Cerna Mountains. The rocky outcrop thus combines the elevation figure with views over the spa resort and the mountains.
The natural area therefore focuses both on the marked trails through the national park and on a single viewpoint above the historic centre. For the trails, accompaniment with or without a guide is explicitly mentioned; Crucea Albă complements this description with its elevation of 529 m and panoramic views of the spa resort and the Cerna Mountains.
