Culture and History

On a hill on the outskirts of Rugi stands the “Adormirea Maicii Domnului” Church. Today, it is located in an isolated position on the edge of Rugi, after the village houses were relocated further downhill. The present building was constructed in 1901. Its predecessor was an 18th-century church that burned down in 1788 during the Austro-Turkish War. Thus, one place of worship brings together a building from the early 20th century and the memory of a predecessor from the 18th century.

The church has a single-nave floor plan with a tower. It measures 25 metres in length and 8 metres in width. On 6 July 2011, the church was reconsecrated after restoration work. Church visits should be coordinated with the currently applicable opening hours or service times.

Rugi was first documented in 1517 under its former name, Rusz. The DJ 587 passes through the village. It runs from Păltiniș on the DN 58 via Rugi and other settlements to Duleu on the DJ 585. Păltiniș and Duleu are therefore at the two named ends of this road connection, while Rugi lies along the route between them. A road connection with named starting and ending points can only be planned for travel using current route conditions. Before setting out, route information and traffic conditions should be checked.

Religious Life

Religious life in Rugi is reflected in events held at different times and locations. During the second week of the Triodion, the Rugi parish held spiritual evenings with services and religious talks. The Rugi parish occasionally organises pilgrimages to monasteries in the country. Spiritual evenings are tied to a specific period and concrete service times; current event dates and times should be checked before travelling. Pilgrimages are also events dependent on specific dates, for which up-to-date information before the start of the journey is advisable.

Rugi is one of the 38 settlements in Caraș-Severin County where traditional Rugis take place on 15 and 16 August. Alongside the spiritual evenings and occasional pilgrimages, this represents another religiously oriented date in the annual calendar. Traditional Rugis are associated with a fixed calendar date; the current event times should also be checked for such occasions.

Rural Heritage

The watermill of Rugi is one of the few remaining mills with a vertical water wheel in Caraș-Severin County. Watermills are facilities for which current opening hours should be checked in advance.

The type locality of the Formaţiunea de Rugi also includes Dealul Cetăţii in the municipality of Rugi in Timiş County.
