Frosinone combines prehistoric traces, Roman architecture, medieval monastic complexes and protected lake landscapes. The Museo Archeologico di Frosinone offers guided tours of its exhibition rooms. The prehistoric section documents human traces in the Frosinone area from the Lower Paleolithic, dating back approximately 250,000 years. The museum also displays archaeological finds from Frosinone and other centers in the province, dating from the period associated with the first historical references to the Volsci in Latium. These include, above all, ceramics, weapons and personal jewelry. The Roman Amphitheatre of Frosinone was built in the 1st or 2nd century AD. On Shrove Tuesday, the ancient Festa della Radeca is celebrated, the local carnival tradition known as Carnuale Nostre, which has shown clear signs of revival in recent years.

Culture

The Certosa di Trisulti is a monastic complex located at an altitude of 800 meters and is a national monument. It includes the medieval façade of the Palazzo di Innocenzo III, which now houses an important library, as well as the neoclassical façade of the church dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, Saint Bartholomew and Saint Bruno. The Abbazia di Casamari is one of the most important surviving examples of Gothic Cistercian architecture.

In Fumone, the Rocca Longhi De-Paolis served as the prison of Celestine V and was the place of his death. The hanging garden of the Rocca Longhi De-Paolis is considered the highest in Europe; it lies at an altitude of 800 meters. Ferentino has significant remains of megalithic walls. The so-called “Outrage of Anagni” of 1303 refers to an event in which Philip IV of France humiliated Boniface VIII.

Nature

Lago di Canterno is the largest karst lake in Latium. It lies in a gently hilly landscape with oak forests and other woodland formations and is protected by the nature reserve of the same name. Typical wetland birds can be found along its shores, including grey herons, purple herons, little egrets, moorhens and great crested grebes. The unpaved paths along the shores can be used on foot and by bicycle.

Another protected landscape is formed by the Riserva Naturale di Posta Fibreno. It covers 345 hectares and is suitable for excursions in a natural and scenic environment.

Things to Do

A publication about the province of Frosinone describes 15 weekend ideas from the north to the south of the province. It also offers suggestions for excursions on foot, by mountain bike and on horseback, as well as trekking and religious routes. These include the Cammino di San Benedetto and the Francigena del Sud.

History

The historic center of Isola del Liri developed in the Middle Ages at the foot of the 27-meter-high Cascata Grande. Since the 11th century, Castello Boncompagni Viscogliosi has watched over the Piana di Sora. At the castle, the Liri divides into two branches that form the Cascata Grande or Cascata Verticale and the Cascata del Valcatoio in the historic center of Isola del Liri.
