Discover Fontana Liri Superiore
Accommodation in Fontana Liri Superiore
Fontana Liri Superiore brings together a medieval town centre, the history of Castello Succorte, church art and views across the Liri River. Set on an olive-covered hill, the town offers several points of interest for your trip: historic buildings, a fresco, paths and seasonal events. Which of these will shape your stay may also play a part in your search for a holiday apartment in Fontana Liri Superiore.
Castello Succorte and the history of the village
Fontana Liri Superiore is the historic medieval centre of Fontana Liri. The present-day village developed around Castello Succorte, considered a historic residence in Lazio and built around the year 1000. Fontana Liri Superiore lies at the foot of the castle, which protected the village. Remains of ancient walls enclose the settlement. At the same time, it is partly deserted and undergoing reconstruction. The castle, settlement and remains of the walls give the town a layered historical character.
Fontana Abballe is also part of the town’s history: this fountain gave Fontana Liri its name. In December 2022, it was reported that it was due to be inaugurated following restoration funded by the Lazio Region with €40,000.
Santa Croce: architecture, art and film
The church of Santa Croce incorporates the former church of Sant’Andrea. Its square bell tower was adapted from an older tower. Santa Croce also houses the Museum of Europe, established by Vincenzo Bianchi and dedicated to Michelangelo Buonarroti under the title “I nuovi primitivi”. Check current opening hours before your visit.
A fresco from the first half of the 15th century comes from the hall of Castello Succorte; its creator is unknown. It is kept in Fontana Liri Town Hall. Santa Croce is also connected with film history: in 1971, some scenes for Nino Manfredi’s film “Per grazia ricevuta” were shot there. The church and fresco thus bring together architectural history, art and a specific connection with Italian film history.
Steps, nature trail and river views
A panoramic staircase with 300 steps connects Fontana Liri Superiore with Fontana Liri Inferiore. A nature trail connects Santa Croce with Fontana Liri Superiore railway station. The two routes have different starting and ending points: the staircase leads between the two towns, while the trail runs between the church and the railway station. Check current information on the nature trail’s signage and upkeep before setting out. Together with the view of the Liri from the olive-covered hill, these routes offer another perspective on the landscape and the town.
Events and culinary dates
“Castrum Fontanae – Polenta e non solo …” is a recurring December event held in Piazza Santo Stefano. At the eleventh edition listed for 2023, dishes on offer included polenta with pork ribs and/or broccoli, as well as other foods such as Neapolitan babà. A 2023 report gives 22 and 23 July as the dates for the 17th edition of Fontana Lirica, a summer event combining classical music and opera. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these dates, check the current event schedule.
This gives you a practical choice of focus when planning: should your trip centre mainly on the history of Castello Succorte and the art at Santa Croce, or would you also like to include the staircase, nature trail and landscape? Tailor your search for a holiday apartment to the daily rhythm that suits your stay.
