Vicalvi in the Valle di Comino combines historical heritage, protected nature and a distinctive culinary tradition. Those planning a trip with cultural discoveries, walks and regional specialities will find a range of options for planning their days here. When choosing a holiday apartment in Vicalvi, you can therefore consider whether the town's history, the landscape or the cuisine should be your main focus.

Historic Places with Unusual Details

The Castello di Vicalvi stands out for its almond-shaped layout. In the Renaissance district of “La Valle”, the buildings extend along both sides of a road that forms a semicircle on the western to southern side of the hill. This distinctive shape gives the historic town structure its own character and invites you to get to know Vicalvi not only through individual sights, but also through its evolved overall form.

The Convento di San Francesco is an important site in the history of culture. The church there was consecrated in 1229 by Bishop Guido. The convent also houses a fragment of the hood from Saint Francis's religious habit. The church additionally contains a wooden crucifix dating from the 10th century. Visitors interested in religious art and medieval history can therefore explore several specific themes in one place, without having to reduce the individual artefacts to the same period.

Other churches also add to the historical picture. The Church of San Nicandro is mentioned in papal privileges issued by Pope Paschal II in 1105 and 1113. The Chiesa dei Santi Giovanni Battista ed Evangelista dates from the 15th or possibly the early 16th century. On the eastern side of the hill, away from the inhabited centre, the Cappella di Santo Stefano Protomartire now lies in ruins. Worked limestone blocks from the Roman period are built into its walls and probably come from funerary monuments. The chapel's name already appears in a document from 1563.

Nature and Trails Around Vicalvi

The landscape of Vicalvi includes the Area Wilderness Parco Bossetto, a protected area in the municipality. Parco Bossetto covers 10.3 hectares. It is probably home to the only known boxwood stand in the Valle di Comino and in the Province of Frosinone. The Cappella di Santo Stefano Protomartire is now surrounded by a pine forest that was created through reforestation in the 1960s and 1970s. Historical traces and a considerably more recent landscape history therefore meet at this location.

For exercise in the countryside, the Anello di Monte Morrone is a good option. The easy-to-walk panoramic trail follows an old mule track and offers views across the entire Valle di Comino. The route includes a short ascent to Monte Morrone, beginning in the settlement of Maschiuna near Vicalvi's medieval castle. Depending on the day you wish to travel, you can plan a route with a panoramic character or focus on historic sites and observing nature.
