Campoli Appennino has an unusual geographical landmark: the town lies on the edge of a large karst sinkhole, known locally as the “Fossa” or “Tomolo.” It also has a medieval town centre, traces of its Roman past, a brown bear enclosure run by the national park, and a truffle tradition. This gives you several themes to consider when planning your trip—from landscape and routes to churches, archaeological finds and regional cuisine.

Karst Landscape and Trails

The large sinkhole defines the town’s geographical setting; “Fossa” and “Tomolo” are its local names. Another natural landmark is the gorge of the Lacerno stream: Route EXC 7 passes through the gorge and ends in the historic centre of Campoli Appennino. Both a striking landform and the town centre are therefore part of the route description.

Campoli Appennino is also home to a brown bear enclosure run by the national park. European brown bears live in the large enclosure and are cared for by park staff. The Big Bench at Colle San Pancrazio adds another distinctive feature: it was inaugurated in 2024 as part of the international Big Bench Community Project by American designer Chris Bangle.

Medieval Town Centre and Historical Traces

The medieval historic centre retains its original defensive wall and characteristic lanes. The parish church of Sant’Andrea Apostolo was built before 20 June 1291 and has nine altars. The church of San Pancrazio is more recent: its construction was completed in 1599. These different dates give the townscape several historical layers, rather than placing both churches in the same period.

Archaeological finds at Carpello also tell of the town’s past. A black-and-white mosaic floor discovered there in 1975 probably belonged to a Roman villa from the late Republican period. When excavations at the Villa of Carpello resumed in 1988, another section of mosaic depicting darting fish came to light. The finds differ not only in their motifs but also in the circumstances of their discovery.

Other historical traces at Carpello include an old, still-functioning watermill near the river springs and a watchtower by the Carpello springs. The tower was probably built around the 16th century. The mill is described as a functioning structure, while the dating of the tower remains tentative.

The church of San Pancrazio houses a wooden statue by sculptor Francesco Verzella, dating from 1804. Every year on 12 May, the statue of Saint Pancrazio is carried through the town’s streets in a solemn procession. For travel planning, this is a clear annual date, distinct from the dates of historic buildings and archaeological finds.

Truffles and Local Traditions

Truffles are central to both the cuisine and festival life of Campoli Appennino: local dishes include truffle-based recipes. The Truffle Festival takes place in June and November and features a market selling the product, as well as tastings of typical dishes. Dates may vary from one edition to the next, so check the details for the specific edition if you plan to attend. An anise cake, traditionally eaten at Easter, is another local culinary tradition.

The possible reasons to visit therefore vary: the procession takes place every year on 12 May, the Truffle Festival has dates in June and November, and the anise cake is associated with Easter. For a trip focused on the town’s history and landscape, the karst sinkhole, historic centre and finds at Carpello are the main highlights.

Choose the Right Focus for Your Stay

If you’re looking for a holiday rental, the balance of landscape, history and food you want can help guide your choice. Consider whether Route EXC 7 and the karst landscape, the lanes and historic buildings, or a visit timed around the Truffle Festival matter most to you. This will help you compare accommodation based on the character of your trip and plan your travel dates around the special occasions that interest you.
