Fiuggi combines two clearly different townscapes: Fiuggi Città with its steep medieval town centre and Fiuggi Fonte as an independent thermal centre to the south, beyond a narrow valley. This contrast is particularly interesting when planning your holiday, as you can choose between historic lanes, nature experiences, thermal traditions and active trails without reducing the character of the town to just one theme.

Two Centres with Their Own Character

The historic village of Fiuggi has largely preserved its medieval architectural structure. Several towers from the former defensive wall, steep narrow lanes, arches, stairways and small squares shape the tour through Fiuggi Città. Portella is the only surviving gate of ancient Felcia; the tower of the same name served to defend it. Anyone interested in local history and historic architecture will find a different travel experience here than in Fiuggi Fonte to the south.

Fiuggi Fonte represents the town’s thermal centre. Fiuggi’s water is oligomineral and has a very low concentration of mineral salts, particularly little calcium and only a minimal amount of sodium. The two thermal facilities mentioned also differ in their landscape settings: Terme di Bonifacio is located in a chestnut forest, while Terme Anticolane mainly consists of gardens and walking paths in nature. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can therefore consider whether the historic town centre or the thermal area better suits your preferred daily rhythm.

Chestnut Forests, Water Birds and Viewpoints

The Fiuggi area is home to typical chestnut forests. The Castagneti di Fiuggi are just a few steps from the town centre and bring a green landscape experience close to the town. Herons, rails and waders stay along the shores of Lago di Canterno; ducks and grebes can be observed on the open water. This complements Fiuggi’s historic side with a tranquil natural perspective.

A notable viewpoint is Big Bench 328. The hike begins at Green House, leads through the streets of central Fiuggi Fonte and then climbs up to the large bench. From there, the view extends to Convento dei Cappuccini, Borgo Antico di Fiuggi, the Monti Ernici and Lago di Canterno. For travel planning, this route can be classified as an excursion with a significant climb, while other routes have a different focus.

Trails for Active Days

The Paliano–Fiuggi cycle path is approximately 25 kilometres long. It follows the route of a former railway through the Ciociarian towns of Serrone, Piglio and Acuto to Fiuggi. Anyone looking for a longer route with a regional connection can include it in their plans. Sulla Vecchia Ferrovia, by contrast, is a slightly more demanding trail along the former railway line that ran from Rome to Fiuggi. Old, rusted overhead line masts accompany the route, which offers views across the entire valley.

Fiuggi is also located on the Cammino di Benedetto, an approximately 300-kilometre-long route connecting Norcia, Subiaco and finally Montecassino. This also places the town within the context of a longer route through central Italy.

Tradition and Regional Cuisine

A special local tradition takes place every year on 2 February. During the Stuzze tradition, residents carry branches and dry logs on their shoulders to burn them and illuminate Fiuggi – in remembrance of the fire of San Biagio. This date is one of the town’s cultural specialities and can play an important role in travel planning for those interested in local customs.

Fiuggi’s culinary offerings include fini fini, handmade egg pasta cut into thin strips. It is served with meat sauce or a simple tomato sauce. Anyone who also appreciates the opportunity to incorporate regional foods and dishes into their travel itinerary when choosing a holiday apartment will find in this speciality a tangible taste of the town.
