Casalvieri combines a characterful old town with archaeological traces, religious art and a varied landscape in the Valle di Comino. Those looking for a holiday apartment for their stay can consider the town a starting point for a wide range of holiday experiences: historical details in the town centre, religious history in the surrounding hamlets, a winding connecting road through the valleys or views from Monte Togna.

Old Town, City Gate and Religious Art

The old town of Casalvieri is characterised by aristocratic palaces, coats of arms, stone portals and craft shops. A distinctive testimony to the town’s history is the Porta di San Giovanni, which is incorporated into the city walls. Despite later alterations, it retains features of its presumed period of origin in the 13th century. The Collegiata dei Santi Giovanni Battista ed Evangelista completes this historic picture: the building dates from the 18th century and was designed by Giacomo Del Sole.

Religious traditions are also part of Casalvieri’s character. The patronal feast in honour of Sant’Onorio is celebrated every year on the last Sunday in May. The celebration includes a procession with the saint’s statue through the town centre. If you coordinate your trip with this date, you can experience a particularly tradition-focused aspect of the town. The Santuario di Santa Maria delle Rose is also located in the hamlet of Roselli. It houses two wooden sculptures from the Neapolitan school: a crucifix from the mid-17th century and a statue of the Annunziata from the 18th century.

Archaeological Discoveries from Antiquity to Prehistory

Casalvieri is also of interest to visitors who want to combine landscape and cultural history. The Museo civico Padre Michele Jacobelli is an archaeological collection featuring fossils, masonry blocks from the pre-Roman city of Cominium and Roman anatomical votive offerings dating from the 3rd to the 1st century BC. The votive offerings were found in a votive pit in the hamlet of Pescarola di Casalvieri.

The archaeological site of Pescarola includes the remains of an Italic sanctuary and a Roman bath complex. Pilgrims used the latter for bathing and making votive offerings. The votive finds from the sanctuary date from the 7th to the 2nd century BC and include weapons, coins, fertility offerings, anatomical votive offerings, masks and statuettes. Other remains include the Roman tombs of Muracce and the Roman Bridge in the hamlet of Casal delle Mole. A stone inscription from the 1st century AD, La Pietra Scritta, recalls a road that Caio Pomponio Tigrano had built at his own expense.

Landscape, Connections and an Unusual Local History

Monte Togna lies in a landscape of extensive woodland and centuries-old oak trees. From there, views extend across the entire Valle di Comino, parts of the Valle del Liri and the Val Roveto. The Fossa carsica del Cavallo presents a different aspect of the landscape: a large sinkhole and the most prominent karst phenomenon in the Casalvieri area.

For trip planning with different points of focus, the Tracciolino is noteworthy: the winding road above the Melfa River connects the Valle di Comino with the Valle del Liri. The Arpino–Casalvieri stage of the Cammino delle Abbazie also passes through the Val di Comino to Casalvieri and highlights the Santuario di Santa Maria delle Rose in the hamlet of Roselli. This makes it possible to incorporate cultural destinations and landscape experiences into a travel plan without every day having to be the same.

A distinctive local tradition is the production of rubber balloons. Its origins are traced back to 1902, when Angelo Rocca founded Italy’s first balloon factory. Palazzo Cellitto, also known as Villa dei Misteri, is located near Casalvieri; its façade bears esoteric and Masonic symbols.

The Right Accommodation for Your Travel Plans

When looking for a holiday apartment in Casalvieri, it is worth deciding first what you want to focus on during your trip. For a culture-oriented itinerary, the old town, city gate, Collegiata and museum take centre stage. Those with a stronger interest in religious history can include the patronal feast, the procession and the Santuario di Santa Maria delle Rose. For landscape-focused days, Monte Togna, the Fossa carsica del Cavallo and the Tracciolino offer different perspectives.

Families and travel groups with different interests can use these themes as a guide: one day can be devoted to local history and the archaeological collections, another to the landscape or the regional connection across the Valle di Comino. Accommodation in Casalvieri is therefore particularly suitable for planning a trip if you do not want to consider culture, religious traditions, historical traces and landscape separately.
