Ripi combines the atmosphere of a Ciociarian village with a remarkable concentration of history. The town lies on a hill amid vineyards and olive groves. In its historic centre, Ripi preserves the overall layout of the ancient castrum; the two old gateways, Porta Santa Croce and Porta Sant’Angelo, make this structure particularly vivid. Anyone planning a journey combining history, landscape and local traditions will find a variety of ways to enjoy memorable days here.

Historic Centre with Special Details

Along the two main streets in the historic centre, well-preserved portal decorations can be seen on homes and workshops. They are of notable artistic interest and invite visitors to pay attention to the details of the buildings while exploring the area. Porta Santa Croce survives as a gateway and faces southwest towards the ancient Via Latina, now Via Casilina. The likewise preserved Porta Sant’Angelo points in the direction of Veroli.

Palazzo Galloni rises above Porta Santa Croce. Its walls were restored in 1781. In Palazzo Candia, the Bersagliere Luciano Manara stayed overnight in May 1849. The Chiesa Arcipretale del SS. Salvatore is also part of the town’s historical landmarks: it has stood in the centre of Ripi since 1743, above an earlier church. Remains of the castle walls are still visible, while the archaeological finds at San Silvestro attest to the rule of the ancient Romans.

Museum, Mine and Views

The Museo dell’Energia di Ripi was created through the restoration of an old public washhouse. In terms of content, it combines an educational laboratory with a geological museum and a science museum. A museum visit can be complemented by a short guided excursion to the Miniera di Ripi in the Le Petroglie district. This brings together an interest in technology, geology and local history in a distinct part of the journey.

For an impression of the landscape, Muriglio Road offers a special viewpoint: from there, panoramas to the north and south across Ciociaria can be observed. Those looking for a holiday apartment with a focus on culture and views can incorporate these aspects into their personal daily itinerary without limiting the trip to a single experience.

Woodland Landscape and Festivals

Macchia di Ripi is an extensive woodland area stretching across the municipalities of Ripi and Ceprano. It is a deciduous oak forest dominated by Turkey oaks (Quercus cerris L.) and Hungarian oaks (Q. frainetto Ten.). This landscape adds a distinctly different side of Ripi to the stone-built evidence of its historic centre.

Religious sites and local festivals also shape the impressions of a journey. The Sanctuary of Santa Maria Succurre Miseris on Colle Santa Maria is a destination for many pilgrims. The Madonna Succurre Miseris festival takes place on Easter Monday at the church of the same name. The Palio di San Giorgio is celebrated on 23 April with traditional games such as sack races, tug-of-war, and other skill-based and competitive games.
