Coreno Ausonio combines impressive mountain landscapes with traces of history and a distinctive local cuisine. The Sentieri Linea Gustav are particularly characteristic: hiking trails that connect historic routes with a landscape linking the sea and the mountains. Travel planning therefore focuses not just on a single viewpoint, but on a landscape where experiencing nature and commemorating history belong together.

Hiking Trails between Sea and Mountains

The trails of the Sentieri Linea Gustav offer views of the western Aurunci Mountains, the Gulf of Gaeta, the Pontine Archipelago, the hinterland of the Liri Valley, and the mountains of Abruzzo and Molise. Depending on your interests, you can therefore combine hiking experiences with expansive landscapes or historical themes. Along the slope crossed by the Via Serra, you can also see quarries that were already in operation in Roman times.

A specific destination for your day’s itinerary is Monte Maio. The hiking trail begins at the public park in Coreno Ausonio, passes through the districts of Riccio and Costa Carosa, and climbs to the summit. At an elevation of 940 metres, there is a 360-degree viewpoint. From here, the view extends across the Gulf of Gaeta and the Pontine Archipelago to the western Aurunci Mountains, the plains of Campania and the Abruzzo Mountains.

Monte Maio: Landscape and Remembrance

A national flag on the summit commemorates the capture of Monte Maio by French troops on 13 May 1944. This took place after the breakthrough of the main Gustav Line front. Anyone interested in the history of the Second World War as well as in landscapes will find a place here where both perspectives stand directly alongside one another.

The Monumento per la Pace di Marinaranne is also part of this historic local landscape. It was inaugurated on 15 May 1994 between Monte Faito and Monte Feuci, at the foot of Monte Maio on the road to Vallauria. Every year, on the third Sunday in May, the Marcia della Pace takes place from the central square of Coreno Ausonio to Marinaranne. The programme includes guided tours along the trails of the Gustav Line.

Cave, Museum and Historic Buildings

An unusual attraction is the Grotta delle Fate on Monte Schiavone in the Contrada Selva di Palma. The cave was carved into the rock and worked with a chisel; cultivated terraces with two wells lie below its entrance. It is considered to be a tomb carved into the rock around the 8th century BC. Important for your planning: the entrance is currently blocked by large boulders, so the Grotta delle Fate is not accessible.

The Eco Royal Museum is a multifunctional ecomuseum that combines the town and art in a single tour. Together with the Church of Santa Margherita, built towards the end of the 14th century, it broadens the view of Coreno Ausonio’s cultural side. The area’s history is also reflected in the Perlato Royal Coreno limestone. It was already used in Roman times, among other things, for the Via Appia, the Via Ercolanea, columns and streets in Pompeii, the amphitheatre of the Roman city of Minturnae, and the Abbey of Montecassino.

Local Cuisine and Choosing Your Accommodation

Laina e fasuri is part of the region’s identity. This traditional first course consists of dough made from flour and water and is served with beans, chickpeas or grass peas. A holiday apartment in Coreno Ausonio can therefore be a suitable base for a trip during which you want to combine hiking trails, historic sites, local cuisine and your own daily rhythms. When looking for accommodation, it is worth first deciding on your personal focus: Should Monte Maio be the main destination, are you more interested in the trails of the Gustav Line, or would you like to combine cultural and culinary discoveries? This allows you to choose the location of your holiday apartment more precisely according to your travel plans, without reducing Coreno Ausonio to just one experience.

Further Places for Your Travel Planning
