Culture

One of the area’s special technical monuments is the historic lime kiln in the Müglitztal. The restored Rumford kiln dates from 1856 and can be visited as a technical monument. An exhibition provides information about the history of the kiln and the significance of Maxen marble.

The Maxen open-air theatre has seating for 500 spectators and presents theatre, cabaret, folk music and choral concerts. It is located in a former Saxon royal marble quarry among rocks and steep slopes beneath the tree canopy. Also in Maxen, the local history museum is dedicated to the history of the village across four exhibition rooms. Exhibits include a diorama with more than 1,000 figures depicting the Battle of Maxen in 1759, documents, coins and weapons, as well as exhibitions on the extraction of limestone and marble.

Nature

FFH area 43E Müglitztal extends through the valley and its side valleys from the crest of the Ore Mountains to the Elbe. It encompasses near-natural flowing waters and typical deciduous forest communities; occurrences of endangered plants have also been recorded there.

Getting Around

The Weesenstein circular trail leads from Weesenstein Castle along the Planet Trail beside the Müglitz to Köttewitz and back. Along the Planet Trail, information boards about the planets are placed at regular intervals. Weesenstein Castle is also associated with a remarkable historic garden culture.

The Weesenstein area in the Müglitztal can be reached by S1 suburban train from Meißen/Dresden or Schöna/Pirna to Heidenau; from there, the Müglitztalbahn SB72 continues to Weesenstein. On weekdays, bus route 202 from Heidenau to Glashütte also serves the Gemeindeamt Weesenstein stop.
