Castle history and culture in Torgau

Torgau’s Hartenfels Castle has two distinctive features. On 5 October 1544, Martin Luther dedicated the castle chapel with a festive sermon, making it the world’s first and only church building of its kind. The Great Wendelstein is a 28.2-metre-high stair tower. Its daring design is considered unique in the world; it is also regarded as an architectural masterpiece of the early Renaissance.
