Mügeln’s St. John’s Church was built between 1232 and 1236. The restored fountain on Mügeln’s Old Market displays a statue of Heinrich von Mügeln and was presented to the public in 2005.
The Mügeln Local History Museum covers the areas of archaeology, urban history, industrial history, crafts, and notable people from Mügeln. It originated from the private archaeological collection of saddler Richard Hummitzsch. The collection includes historical guild documents; the oldest dates from 1506.
The former Marienthal Monastery in Sornzig was built in 1241 and can be used for events. A guided city tour can be arranged through the chairman of the local history association.
History
The Oschatz–Mügeln narrow-gauge railway line opened on January 7, 1885. Mügeln railway station was once Germany’s largest narrow-gauge railway station and has a three-stall engine shed for nine locomotives.
A ride on the narrow-gauge train Wilder Robert travels from Oschatz through the Döllnitz Valley toward Glossen or Kemmlitz and is combined with a visit to Mügeln’s former significant narrow-gauge railway station.
Getting Around
Cycling around Mügeln includes the Döllnitz Cycle Route toward the Elbe or Mulde cycle paths, as well as the Obstland Cycle Route through the surrounding orchards, especially during the blossom season.
A walk at the Mügeln Bench Center offers unusual views over the town and its landscape.
