Wahlrod: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Beilstein in Wahlrod is a basalt cone protected as a natural monument. History, the villagescape, and cycling and hiking routes complement this distinctive natural feature.

History

Wahlrod was first mentioned in an official document in 1249: at that time, the village was recorded as “Waldenrode” in connection with a donation to Herchingen Abbey. The Protestant parish church on Kölner Straße is a protected neo-Romanesque hall church built in 1851. Its churchyard contains gravestones dating from the 17th to the 19th century.

The Marzauer Mill is one of the features described as distinctive of the village. Wahlrod is also home to a 500-year-old Luther oak.

Cycling

A circular tour in the Puderbach region uses farm and forest tracks and requires at least a trekking bike. A cycling tour in the Puderbach region leads through the Rhine-Westerwald Nature Park. The circular tour includes a nature trail in Dürrholz-Daufenbach.

The circular tour also includes a village museum in Urbach, which can be visited by prior appointment.

Hiking and Nature

A route near Wahlrod passes the Sängerhütte shelter. The shelter provides hikers with protection from the rain. A published hiking route leads from Wahlrod to the Beilstein natural monument. There are tables and benches at the foot of the Beilstein.

The route includes former quartzite quarries that were flooded to form ponds. A hiking route from Höchstenbach passes the Beilstein near Wahlrod and the Quarzitweiher pond in the Beroder Forest.
