Maxsain: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Maxsain can continue searching for accommodation afterwards. Numerous tangible reminders of the town’s history can be found in the center and along its streets.

Culture

In the center of Maxsain stand a Protestant church with a historic tower and the half-timbered house “Sahm,” which is described as a preserved example of regional architecture. The Protestant parish church on Kirchweg combines a Romanesque tower with a hall built in 1786.

Other historic buildings include the half-timbered house at Alleestraße 7, partly constructed of masonry and dating from the second half of the 18th century, and the community bakehouse at Hauptstraße 32. The bakehouse is now used as the municipal office and is a rubble-stone building from the late 19th century.

The former school at Kirchweg 1 is a rubble-stone building from the late 19th century. At Alleestraße 8 stands a rectory with a half-hipped roof and rusticated ashlar masonry, dating approximately from the period between 1910 and 1920. The half-timbered house at Kirchweg 13 bears the year 1688, while a well on Alleestraße dates from the second half of the 19th century.

History

Northeast of the settlement, in the direction of Zürbach, lies Maxsain’s Jewish cemetery, designated as a protected historic area. It contains around 35 gravestones, including stones bearing dates from around 1810.

The Hammer Mill also represents the development of the town. The half-timbered building at Hüttenweg 17, partly constructed of masonry, is believed to date from 1727. A derelict ironworks was converted into today’s Hammer Mill in 1861. A power station was installed at the Hammer Mill and generated electricity for the first time in 1902. In addition, a new ironworks with an iron hammer was built below the Maxsain pond and completed in 1729.

Nature

The Saynbach and Steinchesbach streams meet in the center of Maxsain. This creates a natural landscape along the streams, presented as a place for walks, bike rides, and relaxation among the Westerwald hills.

Trails

The Kölner Weg reaches Maxsain with views of the Saynbach valley, passes a half-timbered house, and then continues to Selters. The stage runs predominantly along wide forest paths and includes a substantial climb before Maxsain. In the Maxsain section, the parish church and the former mayor’s house are included as sights along the route.

A bike tour from Selters reaches Maxsain via a 1.5-kilometer section of cycle path. Within Maxsain, the tour follows the Steinchesbach along Alleestraße to Kirchweg and leaves the village via Schönstraße.
