Nature

The Bacher Lay is a nature reserve covering approximately 45 hectares. Standing and flowing waters, shallow and steep banks, dry grassland, tall-herb meadows and basalt cliffs lie close together there. The Bacher Lay also includes a natural stream and a small lake.

The nature reserve provides a habitat for amphibians, reptiles, numerous bird species and several orchid species. It is freely accessible at all times.

The former Bacher Lay quarry features an almost vertical basalt wall that can develop into an ice wall during severe winters. The basalt quarry is connected to the Pfaffenmal natural monument.

History

Nisterau's history is linked to centuries of lignite and basalt mining. The Wilhelmszeche underground mine closed in 1926; at times, more than 600 miners were employed there.

Getting Around

Nisterau offers hiking and cycling paths through and around the town. The nature reserve provides opportunities to encounter characteristic flora and fauna along the way. The Bad Marienberg association offers three developed cycling loops with varying levels of difficulty.

The M4 circular route near Bad Marienberg is 7.3 kilometres long.

Culture

Nisterau's annual events include the Backesfest, which also welcomes visitors from outside the town. An established local event is also an equestrian and show-jumping tournament.
