History
Molsberg Castle was built before 1116 by the Lords of Molsberg and was part of a chain of castles established to protect the trade route between Frankfurt and Cologne. In 1760, Molsberg Castle was demolished to make way for a Baroque palace commissioned by Johann Philipp von Walderdorff. Molsberg Palace has stood on a basalt rock since 1766 and is located on what is now the B8, the historic trade route between Frankfurt and Cologne.
The castle rooms and the palace chapel are housed under one roof. Michael Eytel created the stucco work on the chapel ceiling and in the altar niche. Restoration of the palace chapel was completed in 2007 after six years; the elaborate furnishings of the palace chapel were designed by Johannes Seiz. Molsberg Palace is unfinished and consists of a single rectangular wing. Opposite the former village school stands the Schultheiss House, built in 1688.
Inside Molsberg Palace, visitors can view a model of the former Molsberg Castle. The restored garden pavilion serves as an exhibition space for contemporary art and presents two exhibitions of contemporary art each year. The traditional Whitsun fair includes an open-air church service in the palace courtyard.
Nature
A garden with 258 plum trees and 12 pyramid trees was laid out at Molsberg Palace in 1785. Two trees from the palace park were recognized as German Champion Trees in 2011. The palace grounds include centuries-old trees and views across the surrounding hilly landscape.
Exploring the Area
The Westerwald Loop passes Molsberg Palace. An easy 13-kilometer hiking tour begins and ends in Steinefrenz, leads through hilly fields and meadows, and lists Molsberg Palace among its attractions. Parts of the palace park are open to visitors from Easter through the end of October.
