Alpenrod: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Alpenrod combines the heights of the Westerwald with clearly recognisable traces of its history. The Gräbersberg reaches 513.1 metres and is described as the highest elevation of the western Westerwald between the Nister and the Rhine.

Nature

The Rhine-Westerwald Nature Park offers hiking opportunities in the gently rolling highlands of the Westerwald and in the Wied Valley. The Alpenrod “Maximiliansrunde” Nordic walking route begins below the Gräbersberg. The observation tower on the Gräbersberg in Alpenrod is 73 metres high; its viewing platform is 33 metres above the ground. At the foot of the tower, the Alpenroder Hütte offers refreshments.

The Maximiliansrunde has rail connections via Hachenburg, Bad Marienberg/Nistertal or Rothenhain.

Culture and History

A chapel in Alpenrod probably already existed in 1131. The tower of the Evangelical Church of Alpenrod preserves remains of the walls of a medieval predecessor building. The Evangelical Church of Alpenrod also contains an alms box from 1596 from the former church. The church is a hall church built in the 19th century, constructed in 1843/1844.

The Alpenrod castle site has visible terrain features and is classified as a motte and lowland castle. The castle site is freely accessible as long as the meadow is not being cultivated; parking for the Alpenrod castle site is available on Mittelstraße.

The Alte Poststraße, a historic road relocation near Alpenrod, continued to be used for local traffic and is documented in a register from 1689.

Cycling

The Nister Cycle Route runs along forest paths through Alpenrod, from the Nister Valley into the highlands and on to Hachenburg. The Westerwald-Lahn Cycle Route runs through Alpenrod and Lochum onwards to Linden and Dreifelden.
