Nature and Trails

The GelbACHTrail is an almost 22-kilometre route from Montabaur in the southern Westerwald to Obernhof on the Lahn. It is certified as a “Quality Trail Wanderable Germany”. In the Nassau Nature Park, it offers opportunities to enjoy nature and scenic views, discover art and explore history. Eight further hiking trails connect to the GelbACHTrail and offer opportunities to explore nature, culture and history.

The Heilberscheid Forest Adventure Trail is an approximately 2-kilometre circular route near the barbecue hut, with 11 stations focusing on wood, including a wooden xylophone, a model of a charcoal kiln, a barefoot path and an insect hotel. Four marked Nordic walking routes around Heilberscheid range from 4.5 to 14.5 kilometres and start and end at the barbecue hut. The Heilberscheid barbecue hut has a stove and an open fireplace for heating, as well as outdoor grills and a fire pit.

Near Heilberscheid, the vanished settlement of Sespenroth can be experienced virtually in augmented reality along the GelbACHTrail. An audio drama about Sespenroth tells the story of a grandfather explaining the village’s difficult situation to his grandson; a second portrays a mother encouraging her child below deck on the emigrant ship Leander. A wayside cross and an information board commemorate the former settlement of Sespenroth.

Culture and History

The Heckstein in the town centre is a small former basalt quarry. The Hettenstein open-air stage is an open-air theatre built from basalt in an old quarry with an exposed basalt wall.

The Marien Chapel in Heilberscheid was built in 1889/1890. It houses a carved wooden Madonna that was returned to the parish in 2016. The chapel was consecrated on 18 August 1890; services have been held there ever since.

Religious Sites

The Marien Grotto was created in the disused Hettenstein quarry and consecrated with its statue in 1954. Every year, on the parish’s patronal feast of the Assumption of Mary, a procession leads to the Marien Grotto.

A wayside cross has commemorated the former settlement and the residents of Oberisselbach since 1984. A forest service is held every year on the first Sunday in September at the abandoned settlement of Oberisselbach. The field cross dating from 1899 was erected out of gratitude for an agreement to hold Sunday winter services in Heilberscheid for three years.

The Heilberscheid village tavern is a place where visitors can spend time over food and drinks; it also offers space for family celebrations.
