Gackenbach: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Gackenbach is located in the Buchfinkenland, which, including Gackenbach, lies within Nassau Nature Park. The 14-kilometre Wäller Tour Buchfinkenland circular trail runs around Gackenbach, Hübingen and Horbach. It passes through wooded meadows, streams and small rock formations and lies within the Stelzenbach State Forest Special Area of Conservation. In good visibility, it repeatedly offers views across the Westerwald landscape from the upland plateaus.

Nature

Gackenbach provides access to a certified Nordic walking park with more than 50 kilometres of trails and seven interconnected routes of varying difficulty. The entrance portal is located behind the parish church. Another regional route is the 33.4-kilometre Buchfinken-Gelbach Tour, which runs through Gackenbach and Horbach.

The Westerwald Wildlife Park offers close-up wildlife and nature experiences across 64 hectares, with more than 300 animals, woodland and meadow areas, and family-oriented leisure activities. The visitor trails are steep and not accessible. The wildlife park also includes a playground and a summer toboggan run. The animal collection focuses on European species and endangered domestic breeds.

Culture

The parish church of St Bartholomew in Gackenbach was built between 1879 and 1884 in the Neo-Gothic style and consecrated on 25 June 1884. It has a Göckel organ and a Nelson organ, which can be coupled to form a symphonic organ ensemble. Since 2009, the Gackenbach Organ Concerts Association has organised an annual concert series.

History

In the lower village of Gackenbach, a cast-iron cross marks the former site of the Trinity Chapel, which was built in 1706. The Junkerspfad is a locally known path that, according to legend, is connected with Sarnburg and leads to the church in Kirchähr.

The Schiefer is a rocky refuge on the site of today’s wildlife park that served as a shelter for the inhabitants of Gackenbach and Dies during the war. In the Hübingen valley, the historic Buckerig smelting works processed ore from the mine in Gackenbach’s Goß. The spoil heap of the former mine in Gackenbach’s Goß can still be seen between two ponds in the wildlife park.
