Celtic urns dating from around 1200 BC were found in Sessenbach during pumice mining. A Celtic settlement dating from before 500 BC was identified based on finds recorded in 1936.
Sessenbach was first mentioned in a document in 1220, in a charter issued at Sayn Abbey. Copper and ore mining in Sessenbach is documented for the 18th and 19th centuries. Sessenbach's Marienkirche was built in 1948 after the Second World War through the residents' own work and donations.
