Schalkenmehren: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Schalkenmehren can then continue searching for accommodation. The area includes water-filled maars, dry maars, wetlands and the Schalkenmehrener double maar. The neighbouring Weinfelder, Gemündener and Schalkenmehrener maars form the core of the local maar landscape. The Schalkenmehrener Maar was formed by volcanic activity approximately 20,000 to 30,000 years ago. Its former eastern crater is covered by fen vegetation. Landscape
The Vulcano Trail follows a loop from Schalkenmehren through the Mürmes nature reserve. The western, 16-kilometre Maar Route is the Schalkenmehren branch of the Vulcano Trail. The circular Schalkenmehrener Maar trail is an approximately 3-kilometre-long paved path with reduced barriers. It begins at an accessible car park near the Schalkenmehren Tourist Information Centre and features a 65-metre-long bench overlooking the maar.
Paths and Water
A path almost two kilometres long makes it possible to explore the Weinfelder Maar on foot. The municipal natural maar swimming area offers swimming opportunities, a children's pool, a diving board, a water slide, a shaded sunbathing lawn, as well as changing rooms and showers.
Culture and History
The Home Weaving Museum presents the history and the social and economic significance of the Schalkenmehren home-weaving cooperative. On display are looms, spinning wheels, reels and handicrafts from six decades. The home-weaving cooperative was founded in 1926 and produced Maar cloth textiles until the 1980s.
The Weinfeld Chapel was formerly the parish church of Weinfeld; Weinfeld was abandoned after an outbreak of plague in the 16th century. A church in Weinfeld was first mentioned in 1044, making it one of the oldest churches in the Eifel.
Bus route 560 connects Daun and Bad Bertrich via Schalkenmehren.
