Along the way, it follows a river through a volcanic landscape and passes maars, castles and mills. The Eifelsteig is a 313-kilometre premium hiking trail from Aachen-Kornelimünster to Trier. Nature

Sangweiher and the nature and bird sanctuary of the same name are located between Schalkenmehren and Udler. Sangweiher is described as an ancient maar and an important habitat for many bird species. The hunting and feeding grounds of the cormorant and the rare red kite are located at Sangweiher. Two birdwatching stations hidden among the trees are situated on the shore.

The Pulvermaar near Gillenfeld is described as the deepest maar in the Eifel, with a depth of 74 metres. In summer, it is described as a popular place for swimming and boating. Holzmaar, Hetsche Maar and Dürres Maar lie close together between Gillenfeld and Eckfeld along a tectonic fault. In this group, Holzmaar is the only water-filled maar. Dürres Maar is a transition from a fen to a raised bog.
