Culture
The Nicolaus August Otto Museum displays some of the last original Otto engines; only a few examples of these remain worldwide. Almost all exhibits are explained using multimedia. Free visits are possible by prior telephone registration.
The Protestant Kreuz-Jakobus Church in Holzhausen was built in 1764–1765 and extensively restored inside. Parts of the former gallery paintings can be seen during services. On the Bäderstraße stands the Catholic Herz-Jesu Church, an example of neo-Romanesque brick architecture. In front of the town hall, a memorial stone commemorates the former Jewish residents of Holzhausen by name.
History
Holzhausen Fort is located on the northwestern slope of the Grauer Kopf. Its fortification walls are up to three metres high; it is considered one of the best-preserved forts on the Limes. The remains include rectangular outer contours, tower remains and a semicircular inner wall attributed to a sanctuary.
The remains of the fort can be reached via a signposted 1.5-kilometre forest path from the Bäderstraße. Around Holzhausen Fort, the Limes Cicerones occasionally offer guided walks and information events.
Nature and Paths
The Planet Trail and the Limes Route offer hiking opportunities where visitors can take in the landscape and traces of Roman rule around Holzhausen. Parts of the former railway embankment have been converted into a cycle path.
The Sauerbrunnen is a natural spring with a high mineral content. At the same time, it provides a shady forest stop where visitors can drink the spring water. Holzhausen Forest Swimming Pool has a swimming pool and a non-swimmer pool integrated into the grounds.
