Burgschwalbach: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Schwalbach Castle was built from 1368 onward by Count Eberhard of Katzenelnbogen. Burgschwalbach’s Protestant church is described as being more than 1,000 years old.

History

In 1368, Burgschwalbach was granted the right to fortify the settlement and the right to be elevated to town status. In 1594, Count Wilhelm of Nassau-Weilburg took up residence in Schwalbach Castle. A new water pipeline made of clay pipes was laid to Schwalbach Castle in 1598; remnants of the Burgschwalbach water pipeline were found in 1962. The painted winged altar dating from 1517 from the chapel of Schwalbach Castle is located in the Landesmuseum Wiesbaden. In 1368, Burgschwalbach was granted the right to hold a weekly market on Tuesdays.

Culture

The Protestant church was redesigned in the 14th century with a Gothic 5/8 choir. The nave was extended westward in 1664 and has a 17th-century ceiling decorated with stucco work. The choir contains a black marble baptismal font dating from 1714; two stained-glass windows there were created by the painter Heinz Hindorf. In 1998, Gothic paintings were uncovered in the choir, including trees of life and consecration crosses. The church can be visited by prior telephone appointment.

Nature

Burgschwalbach is described as heavily wooded and offering a high recreational value. The Wehrholz, the highest elevation in Burgschwalbach, offers views over the village and the valley. Above Burg Schwalbach lies Märchenwald, a year-round forest playground with play equipment, huts, and seating areas. Use is free of charge; three huts and a sun shelter can be reserved for private celebrations or children’s birthday parties.

Getting Around

The Palmbachtal Forest Experience Trail is located near Burgschwalbach, between Panrod and Burgschwalbach. At various stations, tree species and forest processes are explained; the trail also includes an acoustic hut, a forest telephone, and an insect wall. Nearby Zollhaus offers cyclists and hikers the opportunity to find mineral springs at the Römerquelle and Johannisbrunnen. Bus route 572 connects Bonscheuer, Burgschwalbach, and Hahnstätten.
