Culture and history

The museum in the Grafenschloss presents Diez’s historical collection to the public across four floors. The material on display ranges from Devonian fossils around 380 million years old to early modern electrical engineering. The museum also features interactive elements involving touch, hearing, smelling, and experimenting.

At Oranienstein Palace, the Nassau-Oranien Museum documents the history of the Dutch royal house. Visits to Oranienstein Palace are only possible with a guided tour and require prior registration by telephone. The princely crypt contains a black marble sarcophagus made for a princess.

Diez Collegiate Church dates from the late 13th century, shows the transition from Romanesque to Gothic architecture, and serves as the burial church of the Counts of Diez and the Princes of Nassau-Diez.

Landscape and paths

The diverted Aar forms a canal-like scene through Diez’s new settlement, crossed by three bridge arches. The Diez Cultural Trail is a signposted urban walk for self-guided exploration and takes around 2.5 hours. The Halfterweg begins at the Old Lahn Bridge in Diez.

The Lahn Valley Cycle Route passes through Sachsenhausen on the opposite bank of the Lahn and then continues downstream along the river. The Diez tourism area supports hiking and cycling along the Lahn and through the hilly landscapes of the Westerwald and Taunus.

Water

The Lahn facilities offer a canoe rest station, a motorboat landing, and downstream a landing stage for the Wappen von Limburg. Wassersport Danner is located at the confluence of the Aar and Lahn and offers canoe tours from 6 to 28 kilometres. The section of the Lahn between Diez and Balduinstein is described as particularly scenic and unusually secluded.
