Laurenburg: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Laurenburg is situated in the lower Lahn Valley between the Taunus and Westerwald. The Lahn is used for water sports, boating trips and fishing; there is also an extensive network of hiking trails, as well as a lit riverside promenade used for evening walks. History and Culture

Laurenburg Palace is located below the castle and has a landscaped park; from the early 18th century onward, it served the Princes of Anhalt-Bernburg-Schaumburg-Hoym as a summer residence. The medieval Laurenburg Castle is the cradle and ancestral seat of the Nassau dynasty. Its descendants include the Dutch royal family and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. After Nassau Castle was built, Dudo’s heirs were referred to as Counts of Nassau from 1157 onward.

Laurenburg Castle was first mentioned in 1093 in a Maria Laach document, in which Count Dudo of Laurenburg is named as one of the witnesses. The restored castle complex contains a knights’ hall with an informative military museum. The expansion of the clubhouse of the Friends of Laurenburg association includes an exhibition room on the history of Laurenburg and a display case containing archaeological finds.

Hiking and Cycling

The Lahn Heights Trail runs through Laurenburg. Eight hikes around Laurenburg are described in downloadable leaflets with maps at a scale of 1:25,000. On the Lahn Cycle Route, cyclists can travel from Geilnau to Laurenburg via two newly built bicycle and pedestrian bridges.

Wine and History

Guided tours around Laurenburg and Scheidt trace the history of medieval vineyards and historically significant themed stations. The KRIMME Route climbs over the remains of medieval vineyard walls to Laurenburg Castle.
