Nature

The section of the Lahn between Diez and Balduinstein is described as scenically attractive and unusually secluded. The Lahn features floodplain meadows, natural banks and wooded areas, and is a habitat for endangered animal and plant species. The landscape of the Lahn Valley is shaped by the winding Lahn, steep side valleys and predominantly natural tributary streams. It also includes a valley floor characterized by grassland, generally wooded slopes and upland areas predominantly used for arable farming.

Trails and Water

One documented route follows the Lahnwanderweg and Lahnradweg in the direction of Staffel, then passes through Gückingen and leads into the forest to Gückinger Wald. The described circular route around Gückingen was approximately 9 km long. Another described hiking route around Gückingen uses the footpath and cycle path from Königsteinhalle to Aull. In the wider tourism area around Diez, hiking in valleys and elevated areas is promoted.

The Lahn is described as suitable for canoeing. On the Lahn's waterways, public launch and landing points are distinguished from rest areas; green information boards mark the respective facilities. Lahn boat trips are offered between Limburg and Balduinstein; boat and canoe rental is associated with Diez and other towns along the Lahn.

History

The oldest settlement traces in Gückingen date from the Urnfield culture. In 1935, a Hallstatt-period burial site was discovered at Pfuhlseck in Gückingen. The urn burials at this site are dated approximately to the period from 750 to 500 BC; it also included a stone cist grave dated approximately to 500 BC.

Numerous urns in flat graves were found in the area of the former municipal sand pit at Pfuhlsheck; they date approximately to 600 BC. Tumuli cremation graves from around 700 BC have been recorded between Gückingen and the motorway. Two of the seven bronze arm rings from the burial are still in Gückingen. Some archaeological urns from Gückingen are kept in a display case in the town hall.

Culture

The area of Gückingen included an agricultural estate belonging to Dierstein Monastery, which was located on the other side of the Lahn in what is now Diez. The estate associated with Gückingen engaged in arable farming, livestock breeding and viticulture in the 13th and 14th centuries. Viticulture at the estate was discontinued in the 18th century.

In nearby Diez, Oranienstein Palace is a Baroque palace. The Counts' Castle houses a museum and offers guided tours by arrangement.
