Culture and History
The Bärenbrunnen fountain was erected in 1913 as a local heritage monument of the Esterau on Holzappel's lower market square, in front of the historic Goethe House. Today's St John's Church was built between 1824 and 1826 in the Neoclassical style on the foundations of an earlier church.
The Esterau Local Heritage and Mining Museum in Holzappel documents the history of the Esterau. Its exhibitions include the former mining operations of the Holzappel mine, domestic culture around 1900, toys and historical photographs of Holzappel. A visit to the museum can be combined with a tour of the Melander crypt in the adjacent St John's Church. The Holzappel mine operated from 1751 to 1952 and extracted lead, silver and zinc.
