Bad Ems' historic spa district has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2021. Throughout the entire historic spa district, visitors can experience historic European spa traditions.
Culture and History
Roman finds from the two former Bad Ems forts are on display at the Spa and City Museum. On the Wintersberg, WP 2/1 preserves Germany's oldest reconstruction of a Limes tower; it was built in 1847 on the foundations of an original tower.
The Roman Limes runs through Bad Ems. Near the historic spa district, it is represented by reconstructions of wooden palisades. The Protestant Martinskirche is the oldest church in Bad Ems; it was built in the 12th century on the site of a Roman fort.
The Russian Orthodox Church in Bad Ems was built in 1876 and features golden domes and valuable iconostases. The Marble Hall was built between 1836 and 1839 and contains wall paintings and columns made of Lahn Valley marble. The former bathhouse was built in 1845 with 30 baths. Bad Ems also offers a one-hour public guided tour through the historic spa district.
Springs, Spa Park and Thermal Baths
Bad Ems has 15 mineral-rich thermal springs. The water from the Robert Kampe Spring is piped to the Emser Therme. The spa park system includes English and French gardens in the valley, as well as larger parkland areas on the Bismarckhöhe.
The Fountain Hall is housed in a Baroque bathing palace built in 1711. It contains the Kesselbrunnen, Kaiserbrunnen and Emser Kränchen springs. Visitors can sample the Emser Kränchen spring free of charge in the Fountain Hall. Kaiser Wilhelm I stayed in the east wing of the Fountain Hall during more than 20 spa visits to Bad Ems.
The Emser Therme is located directly on the Lahn and includes Germany's first floating river sauna. The Robert Kampe Spring reaches 57 °C; its artesian fountain can rise up to eight metres high in summer.
Nature, Hiking and Cycling
Nassau Nature Park offers around 290 kilometres of long-distance hiking trails and more than 750 kilometres of regional hiking trails. The Lahn Cycle Route is a 245-kilometre route from the Rothaar Mountains to Lahnstein.
Stage 19 of the Lahn Hiking Trail leads from Bad Ems via Fachbach to Lahnstein, is 16.5 kilometres long and takes four to five hours. It starts at Bad Ems Central Station and ends at Niederlahnstein Station.
The Emser Bikepark is designed for beginners because difficult elements can be bypassed. It features a 3.8-kilometre mountain bike flow trail with around 380 metres of descent.
On Site and Getting There
The Kurwaldbahn has a gradient of 78 percent. Its upper station offers a view over Bad Ems.
To travel to Bad Ems by train, after arriving by ICE in Koblenz or Limburg, use the Lahntalbahn services RB 23 or RE 25.
