Culture and History

Dhaun Castle, located in the district of Dhaun, is an important cultural monument of the Nahe and Hunsrück regions. The medieval fortress of Dhaun Castle was built in the early 12th century and converted into a Baroque palace in the 16th century under Wild- and Rhinegrave Carl. The grounds include underground passages and a 10,000-square-metre castle park that can be visited daily.

The collegiate church of St. Johannisberg was elevated to the status of a collegiate church in 1318. Its interior contains funerary monuments of the Dhaun Wild- and Rhinegrave family, tracing the development of sculpture over four centuries up to the mid-18th century. The Protestant Church in Dhaun preserves 24 biblical panel paintings as well as 12 paintings of apostles and evangelists from the former castle chapel, dating from the first half of the 17th century. Reproductions can be viewed in the ruins of the former court chapel at Dhaun Castle.

The ruins of Brunkenstein feature clearly visible wall remains. Brunkenstein was one of the strategically important military outposts built in 1336. A guided visitor experience combines Dhaun Castle, the collegiate church of St. Johannisberg, and the Nahe Skywalk.

Trails and Landscape

The Nahe Cycle Path runs through the districts of Hochstetten and Hochstädten. The Hildegard von Bingen Pilgrimage Hiking Trail is promoted as a hiking option for visitors to Hochstetten-Dhaun. The Wildgrafen Trail is listed as a 13.3-kilometre hiking route with a stated duration of 4 hours and 15 minutes. The designated recommended starting and ending point is the “Hochstetten-Geological Educational Trail” hiking car park in Hochstetten-Dhaun. The Wildgrafen Trail can be reached by taking the RB33 to Hochstetten (Nahe) station; this is followed by a 900-metre walk via Bahnhofstraße and Dhauner Straße.

The Wildgrafen Trail passes the ruins of Brunkenstein and offers a view of Dhaun Castle. It also provides distant views across the Hunsrück ridges, the North Palatine Uplands, and the Nahe Valley. The route leads through the Itzbach Valley with protected wetland habitats. The Nahe Skywalk is a 65-square-metre viewing platform extending 7 metres over the edge of a former quarry and overlooking the Nahe Valley.

The Wappensaal Dhaun restaurant is located in the Dhaun district of Hochstetten-Dhaun, in the immediate vicinity of Dhaun Castle, the Wildgrafen Trail, and the Hildegard von Bingen Pilgrimage Hiking Trail. The restaurant has a panoramic terrace and a beer garden with views of the Simmerbach and Nahe valleys and offers regional, seasonal, and themed cuisine.
