Nature
The Vitaltour Felsengarten is a 13.8-kilometre-long, difficult hiking route. As a circular trail, it begins and ends in Simmertal; its starting point is at the historic town hall. The route includes viewing platforms and leads through vineyards, forests and rocky terrain. The Felsengarten is located in the FFH area “Nahetal between Simmertal and Bad Kreuznach”.
Simmertal also has a campsite on the Kellenbach with pitches for motorhomes and bikers.
Culture and History
Simmertal’s historic town hall dates from 1499 and houses a natural history museum with exhibitions on fossils, minerals, botany and ornithology. Visits are arranged by appointment. The Protestant Church was built in 1730 as a three-sided, enclosed rubble-stone building with a square roof turret. It contains a Stumm organ dating from 1730.
In 841, Simmertal was referred to as “Simera”. Roman grave finds in the area of Simmertal are described as evidence of its ancient settlement history. A predecessor church dedicated to Saint Maximin is recorded as existing in 1140.
Hiking Trails
Brunkenstein and Rotenburg were built between Simmertal and Dhaun Castle as military-strategic outposts. A clearly visible section of wall remains at Brunkenstein. The shortest route to Dhaun Castle from Simmertal’s sawmill car park leads via Rotenberg and Brunkenstein.
