Culture and History

The Marienkapelle of Bruschied stands on the road to Schneppenbach and was built in 1699. It is a protected monument. Inside the chapel is a foundation inscription dated 1699. A small bell was added in 1704; it bears the inscription “Ora pro nobis - Jesus Maria Josef Elisabeth ano 1704”. In 1854, the chapel received a tower top built by Bruschied carpenter Matthias Johann Römer. During renovation in 1921, a small seated wooden figure of a devil was discovered, which was interpreted as an old protective charm.

The new parish church of Bruschied had its foundation stone laid on 26 September 1892. St Franz Xaver was built in 1892/93 as a single-nave, plastered Neo-Gothic building with a 5/8 choir. On 4 December 1893, the church was blessed on the feast of its patron, St Franz Xaver. A Way of the Cross was installed in the parish church in 1895. The interior contains several works of art dating from around 1700.

The village square was laid out in 1988/89 on a former garden plot. Gerald Winter artistically designed the village fountain: it is shaped like an open hand holding a round bowl from which water emerges. Reliefs can be seen on the northern wall of the old bakery near the village square.

Landscape

The Lützelsoon is a quartzite mountain range with hiking access. A hike to the 569-metre-high landmark Teufelsfels offers views over the Hunsrück, the Idar Forest and the Nahe Valley, as well as towards the Donnersberg. Bruschied is part of the surrounding landscape.

The Hunsrück-Nahe region is characterised by ancient beech forests, extensive upland plateaus, high biodiversity and regional cultural landscapes. The Hunsrück-Nahe hiking region offers the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig, the Soonwaldsteig, the Hildegard von Bingen Pilgrimage Trail, Traumschleifen and Vitaltouren.

Things to Do

Rudolfshaus, a district of Bruschied in the Hahnenbach Valley, offers access on foot to the ruins of the medieval Schmidtburg, the Herrenberg slate mine near Bundenbach with its fossil museum, and the Celtic settlement of Altburg. The Schmidtburg was first documented as a fortress of protection in 962 and later served as an administrative seat before large parts were destroyed in 1688. The Herrenberg visitor mine presents the work of the slate miners, fossils and a small mining museum; it was adapted to allow wheelchair users to visit.
