Nature

The Hahnenbach naturally winds its way through its meadow valley. Between Woppenroth and Kirn, it cuts a deep gorge into the Hunsrück plateau; the steep slopes are predominantly wooded. Near Hahnenbach and to the north, flatter lower slopes with shale-weathered soils are used as arable land or grassland and extend towards the Hennweiler Plateau.

The surrounding area of Hahnenbach includes the Womrather Höhe, the Koppensteiner Höhe and the Ballenhübel. The fruit press is also located in the surrounding area.

Hiking

The Hahnenbachtal Tour Dream Loop, a premium hiking route through the Hahnenbach Valley, runs near Hahnenbach. Along the route are the Fossil Museum, the Herrenberg Visitors’ Mine, the reconstructed Celtic settlement of Altburg, the ruins of Hellkirch and the ruins of Schmidtburg. In 2012, the route was named Germany’s most beautiful hiking trail.

The Soonwaldsteig trail passes through the municipality of Hahnenbach before continuing into the Steinbach Valley. The starting point of the Soonwaldsteig stage in Kirn is about ten minutes from Kirn railway station.

Culture

After Tilmann vom Stein built Wartenstein Castle in 1357, Hahnenbach became part of the Lordship of Wartenstein. Hahnenbach’s coat of arms refers to the Lordship of Wartenstein with its lion, and to the place name with a cockerel’s head and a wavy bar.

Hahnenbach was formerly known as Hanenbach; the place name is said to derive from the Franconian noble family of the Haganons.

Wartenstein Castle, Steinkallenfels, Kyrburg Castle ruins and Schmitburg Castle ruins are located near Hahnenbach.
