Culture and History

The town hall was built in 1603 in the Renaissance style; a pillory stone stands beside it. Several buildings in the historic quarter have initial construction dates in the 16th century and were rebuilt in the 18th century. The oldest building in Frei-Laubersheim is the defensive tower of the former fortifications, built around 1200.

The newer church was consecrated on November 8, 1970. It is a heptagonal rotunda with an integrated bell tower. Next to the Catholic church, the Peace Linden commemorates the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–1871. The building complex of the former Tholey monastery farm has been preserved, mainly in the Görtz estate. North of Frei-Laubersheim, the foundations of the former St. Catherine’s Church were excavated by a local teacher and a school class.

Museum and Local Characteristics

The village museum of Frei-Laubersheim has a 25-square-metre exhibition room and an outdoor area twice that size. It is located in the former sales room of the Mathes butcher’s shop. This was added in 1905 to a main building dating from 1734. Two shop windows are used to display exhibits. The museum offers opening hours in connection with public events in Frei-Laubersheim, as well as regional, national, or international occasions such as International Museum Day.

The local nickname “Cappes-Laubersheim” reflects the historical importance of cabbage cultivation in Frei-Laubersheim.
