History

Sponheim Castle was first mentioned in a document in 1127. In the 1280s, Sponheim Castle became a Ganerbenburg, a castle jointly owned by several heirs; a document is dated 1287. Sponheim Castle already had its own castle chapel in 1300. During the Thirty Years' War, Sponheim Castle was destroyed and stood as an abandoned ruin in 1645.

The Burgsponheim Counts' Trail is an easy, 4.8-kilometre route with a walking time of about 1 hour 30 minutes and is signposted in both directions. It passes the Schlossberg, Pfaffenberg and Höllenpfad vineyard sites. It is not suitable for pushchairs or rollators.
