Mandel: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Koppenstein Castle is a Renaissance hunting lodge dating from 1624, featuring a projecting pentagonal stair tower and a coat-of-arms stone from 1722 above the entrance. Mandel is described as a wine village surrounded by vineyards, meadows and forests.
Culture and History
Mandel has a documented history spanning more than 1,000 years. The village was first mentioned in 962 as property of St. Maximin's Abbey in Trier. From 1439 onward, Mandel was in the hands of the Dalberg family, who transferred the village as a fief to the Koppenstein family. The Koppenstein family exercised local authority over Mandel until 1768.
Mandel's historic buildings include a Protestant church built in 1829/30, the Romanesque-style brick church of St. Antonius dating from 1897, and a historic rectory featuring early Neoclassical architecture.
Hiking and Trails
The Koppenstein Castle Culture Tour is a 2.2-kilometre historical circular trail. It takes visitors through Mandel's history and provides insight into village life in earlier times. The tour begins at the centrally located village square, which was formerly the site of a walled castle garden. There are free parking spaces directly at the village square.
The Nordic Walking Weiherbach Tour starts and ends at the car park at the Schlossberghalle in Mandel. It covers almost 7 kilometres around Mandel and is signposted with blue trail markers bearing the designation “Tour 4”.
The Sponheim Way is a 105-kilometre historical themed hiking trail that passes through or near Mandel and crosses the Soonwald-Nahe Nature Park.
Cycling and Excursions
The Kleinbahn Cycle Circular Route can be reached from Mandel via an approximately 3-kilometre cycle path to Rüdesheim. The circular route is approximately 37 kilometres long and includes around 370 metres of elevation gain.
Another regional cycling connection is the Nahe Cycle Route, which follows the Nahe from its source at Lake Bostalsee to its confluence with the Rhine near Bingen. The Draisine Tour starts in Staudernheim, around 14 kilometres from Mandel, and follows a disused railway line to Altenglan.
